The Department of Endocrinology at UNIFESP has 3 laboratories exclusively dedicated to research. These are used for developing independent projects or in collaboration with other departments and disciplines within UNIFESP, as well as with other universities and research centers in Brazil. The Molecular and Translational Endocrinology Laboratory (LEMT), the Hormone Laboratory, and the Steroid Laboratory together occupy approximately 350 m² and are located in Research Buildings I and II on the São Paulo Campus.
They are equipped with sophisticated equipment, enabling the development of high-level research. In terms of human resources, all the biomedical professionals working in these laboratories already hold or are currently pursuing their postgraduate degrees and assist our students in developing their research projects.
The equipment available includes: Real-Time PCR System with Tower computer, Axio Imager M1 microscope with ergonomic phototube, Victor fluorescence reader, Automatic Sequencer, Freezers (-80°C), Agilent 1120 Compact LC chromatography system, CO2 incubators, refrigerated centrifuges, Ultracentrifuge, Olympus CK2 Inverted Microscope, Gene Amp PCR Systems, thermocyclers, imaging acquisition systems, laminar flow hoods, cell culture room, primary tissue culture room, bacterial incubator, flow chromatography system, electrolyte analyzer, scintillation counter, automatic analyzer (Elecsys) for immunoassay dosing, among others.
Additionally, the Central Laboratory of the University Hospital (Hospital São Paulo), with around 600 m², has updated its technological infrastructure, modernized its IT systems, and expanded the range of exams offered, aiming to provide quality outpatient care and support clinical research. Most routine laboratory tests for patients monitored at different endocrinology outpatient clinics at Hospital São Paulo are performed here. The lab also offers the possibility of providing services for clinical research projects related to theses.
The outpatient clinics exclusively serve patients from the Unified Health System (SUS) and are used for the practical training of undergraduate students, residents, and postgraduate students, always under the supervision of faculty and assistants.
Additionally, these clinics provide a pool of volunteers for clinical research studies. The clinics are distributed across 4 buildings: the Clinical Outpatient Clinic (for Osteometabolic Diseases and Bone Fragility), the Kidney Hospital Outpatient Clinic (for Obesity and Hypertension), the Diabetes and Endocrinology Center (for Diabetes, Menopause, Thyroid Diseases, Neuroendocrine Disorders, Adrenal Disorders, and Developmental Disorders), and the Hospital São Paulo Outpatient Clinic (for Transgender Care). All clinical care uses electronic medical records, facilitating documentation and record reviews.
The Diabetes and Endocrinology Center, located in a 4-story building, has 15 computerized consulting rooms, an amphitheater with 100 seats, meeting rooms for case discussions, a space dedicated exclusively to clinical research, a diagnostic area (fundus photography, ultrasound, thyroid puncture, neurological tests), and a nursing room.
The outpatient clinics are coordinated by different faculty members and assistants, covering various areas such as gonads and development, neuroendocrinology, thyroid (tumors), thyroid (hormonal dysfunction), thyroid (pregnancy), thyroid (multiple endocrine neoplasia and medullary carcinoma), adrenal, menopause, obesity, as well as various diabetes clinics, such as gestational diabetes, monogenic diabetes, diabetes in youth and adolescents, and post-kidney transplant patients.
A nearby building, with better accessibility for people with physical disabilities, hosts the Osteometabolic Diseases and Bone Fragility Outpatient Clinics. The Obesity Clinic is located in the Kidney Hospital Outpatient Annex, near the Diabetes and Endocrinology Center. These facilities enable the development of high-quality clinical and translational research.
The Diabetes and Endocrinology Center, located at Rua Estado de Israel, 639, is the headquarters of the Department of Endocrinology and the Graduate Program (PPG) in Endocrinology and Metabolism. This building includes 2 meeting rooms with a capacity for up to 12 people, where PG Program meetings and research group activities are held, as well as didactic activities for undergraduates. There is also an auditorium with a capacity for 100 people, where general meetings, courses, and doctoral thesis defenses from the Endocrinology and Metabolism PPG are held.
The Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism is equipped with several networked computers and peripheral devices (printers, scanners) distributed across the laboratories, outpatient clinics, and administrative offices. The interface with other UNIFESP centers or departments, such as the Health Informatics Center (CIS) and the Health Education Development Center (CEDESS), through courses or consultations, facilitates rapid learning and the use of the latest IT resources.
Postgraduate students in this program also have access to a room located in the Diabetes and Endocrinology Center with computers and printers connected to the network, available for bibliographic research and writing of articles, theses, and projects. Statistical software, reference management tools, and sequencing analysis programs have been acquired to support students in executing their projects. Multimedia equipment is also available for students and advisors to hold their weekly meetings.
The graduate program's website is continuously updated with relevant information to increase visibility. Additionally, the Endocrinology and Metabolism Postgraduate Program has a Facebook page that updates meeting schedules, courses, thesis defenses, and events of interest in the field.
The São Paulo Campus Library, Prof. Antônio Rubino de Azevedo, offers free access to its collection for both internal and external communities, as well as guidance on using the library. It provides services such as loans to the internal community, interlibrary loans, bibliographic surveys in various health-related information sources, and assistance with standardizing academic work according to Vancouver and ABNT guidelines.
The library offers in-person and online courses on using bibliographic managers (EndNote and EndNote Basic), guidance on the Lattes platform, and assistance with filling out Research ID and My Citations on Google. It also provides support for manuscript submission to national and international journals and the preparation of cataloging records for the internal community.
The library includes an inclusive room with two internet-connected computers and specific accessories for visually impaired individuals. There are also 15 computer stations with internet access for the internal and external community, and access to the electronic collection: CAPES Journal Portal and Digital Repository of Theses and Dissertations.
Furthermore, our program benefits from two research areas equipped with several computers and printers connected to the entire UNIFESP and Hospital São Paulo network, allowing postgraduate students to conduct research and prepare their work. One is located at the Department of Endocrinology headquarters (Rua Botucatu 806), and the other at the Diabetes and Endocrinology Center (Rua Estado de Israel 639).
